National League Announces Gold Glove Award Winners
Sunday, October 26th, 1930: It's been said that the best offense is a good defense. That's why contending teams are always looking to improve on the defensive side of the game. Keeping runs from scoring is just as good as driving them in. The top fielders have been chosen in the National League for 1930. Here are the Gold Glove Award winners:

Pitcher: Rube Walberg (Pittsburgh Pirates)
Catcher: Shanty Hogan (Pittsburgh Pirates)
First Baseman: Joe Hauser (Cleveland Blues)
Second Baseman: Jimmie Dykes (Cleveland Blues)
Third Baseman: Woody English (Boston Beaneaters)
Shortstop: Luke Appling (Cincinnati Redlegs)
Left Fielder: George Ferrell (St. Louis Cardinals)
Center Fielder: Hack Wilson (Chicago Cubs)
Right Fielder: Dick Porter (St. Louis Cardinals)
Best Rookie Trophy Presented to Appling
Sunday, October 26th, 1930: Cincinnati fans have reason to cheer today as shortstop Luke Appling brought home the National League Rookie of the Year Award for 1930.

He put together a .332 batting average on the strength of 194 hits and swatted 1 home run. He also racked up 74 RBIs and scored 78 runs, signaling that this might be the beginning of a solid baseball career.
1930 Pitcher of the Year Award Winner Announced
Sunday, October 26th, 1930: The Philadelphia clubhouse staff referred to him as "the kid" this season. Next year Satchel Paige will have to have a new nickname. He earned it after winning the 1930 National League Pitcher of the Year Award.

Paige made 41 starts this year, winning 20 and losing 12. He threw 316.2 innings, fanned 350, allowed 232 hits and 101 walks, while holding opposing teams to a .204 average as he logged an impressive 2.47 ERA.
